The police are investigating an accident which occurred early yesterday at Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara (WBD) and resulted in the death of a 21-year-old motorcyclist.
Shawn Patrick, of Lot 89 David Rose Street, Bagotville, WBD, died while returning home from a lime at Pourderoyen.
According to reports, Patrick was riding a motor cycle CH 8338 proceeding south at a fast rate when he overtook a motor car on a turn and ended up hitting the left side of a motor lorry and then slammed onto a utility pole.
He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the motor lorry is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
The young man’s mother, Abiola Patrick, said that she last saw her son Friday night just before he left home to go to a ‘lime’, a few villages away from his home.
“Every Friday night, it does have a ‘lime’ at Pouderoyen and he left home to go there,” the woman noted. She said that Patrick was the eldest of her six children and worked as a porter to assist in the home.
According to the woman, she was asleep when someone called and informed her that her son was involved in an accident.
“I went to the scene and I saw him on the road. His face was crushed, his brains crushed and his neck seemed broken. He was crushed. Everywhere looked broken, his hands and foots,” the woman stated.
She explained that someone told her that her son rode into a truck.
Police believed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident since persons reported that he had been drinking at the ‘lime’.
A Port mortem examination is expected to be performed on the remains of Patrick on Monday.
