Guyana’s Golden Jaguars restored some pride in their Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup campaign with a solid 7-0 whipping of the United States Virgin Islands in their final Round 2 match that was contested at the Adelita
Cancryn Playing Field, St. Thomas, USVI, yesterday.
Playing on a below quality surface that should be the standard at this level, the Guyanese players under the guidance of Captain Samuel Peter Cox did not allow the conditions to deter their focus as they kept the focus as Assistant Coach Wayne Dover had stated before.
Trayon Bobb opened the scoring just over the 20 minute mark and the Jaguars never looked back, it was the first of his double. Ricky Shakes also netted a brace of goals as did substitute Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams. Devon Millington also added his name to the score sheets on the half hour.
Commenting on the result, Dover congratulated his charges for sticking to the game plan and delivering.
“We knew this game would provide opportunities for us to score some goals and give us the chance to advance. While we missed a couple, I think Anthony Abrams came in and showed his experience and he was very clinical for us.”
While the win was good especially coming after defeat to Curacao in their first match of Round 2 by a 2-5 margin on Wednesday, Dover admitted that the journey is a long way from over.
“We have a lot of work to do to bring the locally based players up to that level of urgency required at the international level.”
Guyana’s Starting X1 – Richie Richards (GK), Quincy Adams, King Solomon Austin, Kester Jacobs, Walter Moore, Ricky Shakes, Brandon Beresford, Samuel Peter Cox (Captain), Trayon Bobb, Sheldon Holder, Devon Millington.
Reserves – Alex Murray (GK), Colin Nelson, Dwight Peters, Anthony Abrams, Adrian Butters, Daniel Wilson, Eon Alleyne.
Emery Welshman and Pernel Schultz were unavailable for the game.
