One of Guyana’s most wanted criminals for whom a wanted bulletin was recently issued is in jail in neighbouring Suriname.
The authorities in Guyana were unaware of his incarceration in the neighbouring Republic.
The man Rickford La Fleur called Rickford Williams or Rickford Sabola, Bragga or Rastaman, 41, is wanted in Guyana for two counts of murder. He escaped twice from the New Amsterdam Prison. He is also wanted for possession of a large quantity of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
La Fleur also had a number of addresses. He lived at Circle Street, Skeldon; Vryheid’s Lust Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara; Smithfield, New Amsterdam and Canje River.
La Fleur first came to notoriety during November 2010. He is accused of murdering Cleveland Hetmyer called ‘Water Dog’, 33, of High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue. Hetmyer was shot to death reportedly during a confrontation with the suspect and another man at Silverballi Gutter, some 90 miles up the Canje River on November 4, 2010. The man’s body with bullet wounds to the leg and ribcage was recovered in a boat floating in the Canje River.
La Fleur was nabbed at a back track cross in March 2011 with two kilograms of cocaine and 600 grams of cannabis in his possession.
Whilst in prison awaiting trial for murder, narcotics and escaping charges, La Fleur was charged with murdering an inmate. It was alleged that between April 27, 2011 and May 4, 2011, he along with others murdered 24-year-old Sebastian Cleto, called ‘Short Man’, ‘Plato’or ‘Clato,’ of 42 Bent Street Wortmanville, Georgetown.
The men were accused of while armed with wood and other implements beating Clato and another man who were both prisoners of the New Amsterdam Prison. Clato, who was rendered unconscious due to an injury to the head, was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being transferred to the ICU of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he subsequently died.
La Fleur subsequently escaped again in June 2011 along with three others. The others were Kevin ‘Long hair’ Narine, who has since been nabbed in Suriname and is serving time; Vijay Seenarine, of Little India, Skeldon, Corentyne; and notorious criminal Vindoo Gopaul who was another two-time prison escapee and was incarcerated for killing his father. They have all been recaptured.
During the 2011 escape the men broke out from their cells at about 02:30 hrs. They used a cement strap to scale down the side of the wall before ripping a hole in the fence and making good their escape. That escape was captured on camera.
The rope, it was revealed, was taken into the prison a few days before the escape and was given to one of the escapees.
La Fleur is serving a four- year sentence for robbery under arms in Suriname.
