Twenty teachers from the United Kingdom have chosen to give up their summer break to offer training and interaction with teachers in Guyana.
The group, part of the organisation “Limited Resource Teacher Training” (LRTT), will be here for four weeks in August.
They will be expected to return to their homeland with new knowledge as Guyanese teachers will be discussing their teaching practice with them.
One member of the team is a Director of LRTT and has lived in Guyana for the past four years. Tom Greenwood told Kaieteur News, “There is a lot of potential for teacher collaboration and ongoing teacher training in Guyana. The country is a fascinating place and more people should be given the opportunity to visit and experience it.”
Mr Greenwood led the same project last year and found that the teachers from the UK and Guyana learnt so much from each other. This was most encouraging and paved the way for the teacher training conference that is to happen again this year.
He explained, “It would be a good opportunity for teachers from the UK to share their experiences with teachers from Guyana, and for teachers from Guyana to return the same to teachers from the UK.”
He added that at the end of the programme, teachers from both countries will “inspire each other to improve the way they teach and to improve the life chances of the students they teach.”
The workshops have been approved by the Ministry of Education in Guyana for the second year running.
Registration has already begun for the conferences with a number of teachers signed up for both the Georgetown and Lethem conferences. The Georgetown conference will be held at School of the Nations, from August 1, to Thursday August 4. The Lethem conference will be held from Tuesday August to Friday August 12.
.Places for both is limited. Teachers need to register with Mr Greenwood by calling 693 9907. Attendance is free and certification will be provided.
