The Police have reported a significant drop in the crime rate in the West Berbice Sub-division over the past two months.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police, Antonio Fredericks, Officer-in-
Charge, Fort Wellington, when comparing reported crimes for the period January to May this year with figures for the same period for 2015, there would seem to have been an increase this year.
He said that because of a change in the strategy employed by the police, there has been a significant drop in the number of reported crimes over the past two months, suggesting that the strategy employed has been working.
There has been increased police presence in the various districts in general; foot patrols as well as mobile patrols are now employed round the clock. Special attention has been given to various crime prone areas, and the stop and search initiative by traffic ranks would have also been a significant factor in the evident success in the anti-crime pursuit in the sub-division.
The efforts of the regular police ranks have been supplemented by the Neighborhood Police and Community Policing Groups. The initiative has been yielding positive results.
Mr. Fredericks also said that the force is quite pleased with the support that the police are now getting from the community. People have been coming forward with information on criminal activities. The business community has also been of assistance to the police.
The police, in recent times, have been involved in initiatives seeking to win the confidence of the community. One of the rationales behind such a move is the awareness of the force in general that the general public has a part to play in helping the police in the fight against crime. To this end the police have organized youth clubs in the sub-division with three such clubs within the Fort Wellington policing district, and one each at Weldaad, and Blairmont Police Station.
These clubs cater for young people between ages five and twenty-five. There have also been seminars in the various communities together with other forms of interaction aimed at steering young people away from possible crime, and at the same time seeking to foster better relationship between the police and the community. These initiatives have been spearheaded by newly promoted Inspector Cynthia Kelly stationed at Fort Wellington.
