Motorcyclists are once again being reminded that riding on the country’s roadways without proper safety helmets is an offence. Once caught, charges will follow.
This reminder is coming from Acting Traffic Chief, Boodnarine Persaud.
During a recent interview at his Eve Leary Head Office, he stressed the importance of safety helmets to both riders and pillion riders.
In the event of an accident, the acting Traffic Chief said that the helmets will offer some form of protection. “Riding without helmets is dangerous; they (motorcyclists) are always the vulnerable group because they are injured in the slightest collision.”
“If you are driving on the road, you will see them (motorcyclists) pass you on the inside or on the outside and because of the congestion, you will hardly find them driving behind a vehicle. They will always try to pass through any little space,” Persaud stated.
As of May 18, last, 16 persons were killed while on motorcycles. Of the total, four were pillion riders.
Persaud said that most of the persons who were killed in accidents were not wearing helmets and while there were some who were wearing, it was not properly strapped so when the collision occurred, it flung off their heads and it could not have protected them.”
As a result of this, they died from brain haemorrhage and other internal head injuries. Apart from those who were killed, there were survivors also and this is mainly because they were protected by helmets.
“There were people who suffered from broken limbs and survived,” Persaud pointed out.
He added, “We have to bear in mind the traffic on the road and that without the helmets; they (cyclists) have no other form of protection.”
Responding to questions about police ranks passing motorcyclists without helmets on the roadways and failing to stop them, the acting Traffic Chief said that he has not received any such reports and if indeed it happens, then ranks need to ensure that the traffic laws are being adhered to.
Only two Thursdays ago, motorcyclist Karamchand Singh was killed in an accident at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) while on his way home from a birthday party. The father of two collided with a motor vehicle. He was not wearing helmet and died as a result of head injuries.
Also, On April 18, last, biker Rudolph Bess and his 16-year-old friend, Hansranie Persaud were killed during a three vehicle collision at Coverden, East Bank Demerara.
Police believed that Bess’s helmet was not property strapped since his head was crushed and his brain was seen on the roadway.
