Dear Editor,
These days of celebration of the Jubilee of the independence of this beautiful Guyana, we get to see and hear about our own national symbolisms by patriotic Guyanese and non-Guyanese. This is really a moment to celebrate our own heritage because we are worthy of our own heritage. It is heartening for me to see and hear this in our celebrations of Independence. We have a rich heritage and it is right that we showcase this so that our children learn to be patriotic.
But allow me say some of the disheartening desecration of our national symbols. Our Golden Arrowhead is all over the place and is being trampled. This is really an insult for our flag. Our national anthem is sung in misappropriate manner. I heard a group of foreigners (non-Guyanese) signing the national anthem with off note screaming and of course let me not mention the posture they used to sing. I felt they were insulting our national anthem. Pity is that they live in Guyana and insult the land that presently dwell. My question is; do we have a law against the people who intentionally insult or desecrate our national symbols? I know some of the countries have the law of imprisonment for a term of up to three years or fine.
