Twelve young members of the GBTI/Buxton Pride Steel Orchestra landed in the United States of America yesterday to be part of Golden Jubilee celebrations there.
The band members, who are all secondary school students, along with Band Organisor Rollo Younge, deplaned at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport around 17:00 hours from a Fly Jamaica flight.
The children were accompanied by their parents to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, where they created a positive stir, with their bright yellow jerseys and their 17-piece band equipment, among the hundreds who were there to see off relatives.
Some other members, who are currently engaged in both Ordinary and Advanced Level Examinations, will join the initial group at a later stage.
The band which placed second at this year’s Mashramani Steelband Competition, was invited to perform for “Guyana Jubilee Celebration NYC”.
The celebrations are scheduled to begin on June 4, and continue until June 12, 2016.
The band would like to express its gratitude to Sir Rollo Younge, Committee members of the Guyana’s 50th Independence Celebration Committee (New York), Ms. Lorna Campbell, Ms. Jocelyn Wilson, Fly Jamaica, and others who afforded the members with the wonderful opportunity to showcase young Guyanese talent in New York.
