The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) has written to clarify their position following an article posted in the Kaieteur News on May 27th last. The article on powerlifter Daniel Sooklall’s quest to represent Guyana at an upcoming event, cited some issues in relation to sponsorship and donations for the travel of the athletes that the GAPLF was at odds with. The federation has written to Kaieteur Sport on the matter and we have decided to carry their letter in its entirety and offer an apology to the GAPLF for any undue discomfort this article may have caused and would look to cooperate and support the federation in their quest of outstanding representation of this country. (Here is the full text of that letter (officials contact info has been removed)
Dear Sir,
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting federation wishes to clarify an article posted in your newspaper dated May/27/16 captioned “Sooklall eyes C’bean Powerlifting C/Ship in St Croix… Sponsorship could biggest weight on his shoulders”.
The GAPLF wishes to inform you that we have (NOT) solicited, collected or negotiated ANY sponsorship from the Government of Guyana or ANY Government Agencies. Furthermore, Mr. Sooklall has never represented Guyana or the GAPLF in the capacity of a Powerlifter and has recently been SHORTLISTED to compete at the 14th Annual IPF/NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships and the 9th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Regional Championships will take place on August 14-19, 2016 at the Renaissance Hotel Carambola Beach Resort in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.
It was also noticed that Mr. Sooklall declared that he was the 59kg Champion for 2016 which is not the case. According to the GAPLF’s Senior National Powerlifting Championship results, Mr. Sooklall was awarded Second (2nd) Position behind Navendra Tamessar of Berbice. We look forward to this article being corrected and would also request that the reporter contact Martin Webster or Paul Adams to clarify if this was indeed the information provided by the athlete as such behavior would be termed a breach of the GAPLF’s Code of Conduct. We look forward to your cooperation.
Yours respectfully,
Ed Caesar
President
