Dear Editor,
In spite of a new Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown being elected at the last local government elections in Guyana held on March 18th 2016, things have not gotten better; in fact they have gotten a lot worse. There seems to be a complete lack of ability or a lack of desire by the new Council to bring a halt to the illegal behavior and unlawful activities at City Hall.
First, could someone say how the Georgetown Municipality could enter into an agreement with a purported service provider carrying the name National Parking Systems, to install and monitor parking meters in Georgetown, which is owned by a Guyanese living in the United States and which has no prior record of installing parking systems, without a public bidding and tender process? And worse doing so while already engaged by way of an existing contract with a locally based company for the same purpose by the name of Astrolobe Technology Inc.
Of course the Mayor and the Town Clerk will pretend to be ignorant of the legal ramifications just as they suggested that they were ignorant of the court matter involving the ‘Dread Shop’. Then again, why bother? It would just be the citizen’s money going down the drain and not theirs, when Astrlobe Technologies takes the matter to court.
Second, could someone say how one security company could have been given the contract to supply over sixty guards at a time to municipal locations without a bidding process for these services? And worse how could some of these guards be posted at one of many residences owned by a very senior officer which is located way outside the boundaries of Georgetown on the East Bank, whilst the City Police guards another of his properties, the one that he resides at in Georgetown? Such extravagance on the backs of the citizens of Georgetown.
Third, how could City Hall just pay out over eighty million dollars to its favourite contractor, who is a close friend of a senior administrator at City Hall, whilst being unable to pay its workers, the garbage contractors, the security company, the GRA and the NIS and many others. This is the highest level of corruption taking place, whilst no one is raising a finger to stop it. I beg the President of Guyana to intervene and bring this madness to a halt immediately.
