Dear Editor,
I am a resident on the Essequibo Coast (Reg. #2) and also a well known business person. I’m writing to you because of the injustice system we have been facing here in the county of Essequibo with TWO SPECIFIC Police Officers Constables (name supplied) who are attached to the traffic department at the G Division Police Station in Essequibo.
On Friday 1st April, 2016, I was heading to the bank to make a deposit from my weekly earnings when I was stopped by these two specific officers. They told me to “drive to the station”.
When I got there, they told me my car is “too tint up” and thus I was arrested and my car was impounded. I had my brother and his two year old son in the vehicle at the same time along with my weekly earnings.
I explained to constable Roberts of the situation and he started yelling on me at the top of his voice and threatened me to lock me up and frisk me as if I am some big criminal. I felt so embarrassed, as the sergeant had to come in and told him to “ease” his voice.
The way constable Roberts reacted to me was not indicative of his job but of a personal attack towards me. Never the less after the ordeal, I went to the Commander in which I explained to him the situation in which he instructed the officers to release my car and as soon as I was about to drive out the compound, Constable Roberts and Paris both ran out and stop me from exiting the compound and re arrest me and told me the tint on my car needs to be removed before I leave the compound, as they told me so, I obeyed there instructions and took off the tint from my car.
I am not the holder of a license fire arm and the tint on my vehicle is the only protection I have as this time, with the crime rate up so high its rather difficult to take my money to the bank.
This is not the first time I have been victimized by these two specific traffic ranks. On one occasion, they demand I “left something” or they will strip my tint and out of fright I give them $10,000.
At another occasion my wife was driving my car, they stopped her and demand her phone number and threatened her with arrest and pounded on the vehicle if she did not comply. These are the pressure we are facing with these two specific police officers.
These two specific constables have left untouched their friends’ vehicles heavily tinted and also their own tint as if they are some minister or the president.
These two can be seen drinking in their uniforms at bars during working hours as I cannot seem to understand why offers of the law who swore to “serve and protect” behave and threat people in this manner. In my closing remarks, I strongly suggest these TWO SPECIFIC Officers be transferred or stripped from their jobs or we will be forced to continue live as victims of act.
