The fourth annual Independence T20 cricket competition which is jointly organized by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA) which was slated for last weekend at the Rose hall Community Centre ground was postponed due to the inclement weather.
Four top T20 teams in the county were slated to participate with each team expected to feature one guest player.
The teams that were expected to participate were Upper Corentyne / Port Mourant with former West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan expected to feature, Albion / Rose Hall Town was expected to have Kemo Paul, New Amsterdam/ Canje has Shimron Hetmyer and West Berbice / Blairmont combined is expected to include Tevin Imlach.
At the end of the day’s competition the funds garnered are used to assisting with the development of Sports in the Region, including two first division clubs; assist two orphanages, two schools in Berbice among other ventures. Money is also put aside to assist some needy cause in case of health.
The winning team is expected to pocket $100,000, the runner up $50,000 while the man of the match will collect $10,000. Trophies are also up for grabs.
The organizers would like to thank the sponsors for their support over the years and advised that the letters seeking sponsorship for the 2016 tournament is still valid.
The organisers will meet shortly to make plans for the staging of the event. (Samuel Whyte)
