Dear Editor,
With the Golden Jubilee being such a is a pivotal milestone for this dear land of ours, and with hundreds of thousands joining each other celebrate the Guyanese culture, and to rejoice in our shared experiences and values as we move forward to a brighter future, it was extremely sad to see the City’s workers who worked so hard to prepare the capital city being prevented from enjoying the fruits of their labour.
Of all the times that the Georgetown City Council chose to delay the payment of wages and salaries was the month of May 2016, our Golden Jubilee month. It is most unpatriotic, it is cruel in fact I would consider it sacrilege. The pockets of the big boys in the Council’s administration are filled with ‘perks’ so they could have celebrated in fine style, but it was the small man that suffered, and was prevented from attending the shows and other events.
How could Royston King and his administrators look into the eyes of the butchers, policemen, street orderlies, construction workers day care attendants, drivers and cleaners and wish them a Happy Independence?
During the administration of the previous Town Clerk, never one month were salaries were paid late, because there was never such squander mania.
The President or the Minister of Communities should have intervened and saved those poor workers. Where is the Union? Somebody has to save the city and its workers from this new Pharaoh, this new ‘King’, For these workers I quote from the bible: Psalm 13:1 How long will you forget me, LORD? Forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
