talented young swimmers locally with an outstanding performance that saw her achieving a new record, claiming gold in the process when the National Sports Commission/Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Independence Meet continued yesterday.
Persaud of the Orca Swim Speed Club overcame Patrice Mahaica of Dolphin Swim Club and Nia Fraiser of the USA to win the Girls 9-10 50m Butterfly in a time of 34.89 seconds bettering her old record of 36.00.
Persaud maintained her winning streak winning the 9-10 100m Breaststroke in I:40.31 seconds. Mahaica placed second in 1:46.52 while Antonia Dey finished third in 1:47.56. Persaud also captured the 50m freestyle to crown off an outstanding day.
Raekwon Noel of Silver Sharks Swim Club bettered his old time of 35.52 to win the boys 9-10 50m Butterfly in 33.28. Paul Mahaica of Dolphin Swim Club took the runner-up spot while Lajuan Munroe claimed third.
Noel was in winners’ row once again when he carted off the 9-10 100m Breaststroke in 1:37.72 ahead of Mahaica and Ethan Gonslaves of Dorado Swim Speed Club. Noel then won the 100m Freestyle in the said division.
Amy Grant won the girls 13-14 800m Freestyle while Kenita Mahaica captured gold in the girls 13-14 50 butterfly; Grant placed second.
Ariel Rodrigues of Orca Swim Speed Club took the top podium spot in the Girls 8 & Under 50m Butterfly in 45.88 while Sarah Ramsammy of Dolphin finished second. The boys’ equivalent was taken by Emmanuel Primus of Dorado ahead of Jeron Sokram of Dolphin and his team mate Jeremy Sookram.
Lian Winter of Dorado claimed the girls 11-12 50m Butterfly in a time of 33.86; Silver Sharks (SSK) duo of Jadyn George Silver Shark and Danielle George captured second and third respectively.
The Boys 15-17 50m Butterfly was taken by Phillip De Nobrega of Orca in 28.12, his teammate Antonio Rodrigues claimed silver and Jamaal Skeete of Dorado bronze. Jadyn George (SSK) grabbed gold in the Girls 11-12 100m Breaststroke in 1:33.91; Danielle George occupied the runner up spot while Donna Carter of Dorado finished third.
Leon Seaton (SSK) overcame Sion Jeffers (Dolphin) to win the Boys 11-12 100m Breaststroke in a time of 1:34.50 while Nikita Feditkou (Dolphin) claimed the girls’ 15-17 Breaststroke in 1:43.41.
Antonio Rodrigues took gold in the 15-17 Boys 100m Backstroke while Eve Harry of the Guyana Police Force won the Girls 18 & Over 100m Breaststroke. Lindon Barkoye gave the GPF its second gold by winning the Boys 18 & Over 100m Breaststroke in 1:34.28; his teammates, Trevon Gillins and Troy Benn ended in second and third position respectively.
Ariel Rodrigues and Jaden Dey landed gold in the Girls and Boys 8 & Under 50m Freestyle events, respectively. The day’s activities started with the official opening ceremony which was attended by Cuban Ambassador Julio Caesar, Director of Sport Christopher Jones, Dr. Joseph Haynes and host association President Ivan Persaud.
Caesar commended GASA for their efforts adding that his country will continue to support the sport here. Jones who declared the day’s proceedings opened thanked Ambassador Caesar while lauding the parents for supporting the young athletes. (Zaheer Mohamed)
