People can become addicted to crimes in the same way they can develop a dependency on alcohol or drugs.
Such is the case of Nico Layne and Mike Tyson- as it appears as if they find some level of excitement committing crimes, especially armed robberies.
Mike Tyson of Lot 567 Conciliation Drive, Tucville, Georgetown, has been described as a serial carjacker.
This 25-year-old young man is known for habitually boarding taxis and ‘sticking up’ the drivers with a gun before escaping with their vehicles. For the year, he has been sentenced to a total of 76 months’ imprisonment by two Magistrates sitting in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on two counts of robbery under-arms.
Just recently, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, found him guilty of robbing taxi driver, Lawrence Singh at gunpoint of his Toyota Spacio motorcar car valued at $2M, a cell phone and $10,000 cash on August 10, 2015. The Magistrate imposed an 18-month prison term on him.
During the trial, Magistrate McLennan relied on a testimony given by the victim who testified that he picked up Tyson at La Grange, West Bank Demerara and dropped him off at McDoom, East Bank Demerara.
Singh recalled that the convict disembarked his vehicle at a Mc Doom gas station and another man entered his car and pointed a gun at him demanding that he drive the vehicle.
The witness said that he ran out of the vehicle and begged for his life with the gunman hot in pursuit. According to Singh, persons came to his rescue and the gunman eventually made good his escape. Tyson, he said, jumped into his vehicle and sped away.
The taxi driver recounted that he alerted police before boarding a taxi to chase after the carjacker. Police chased after Tyson and he eventually crashed the stolen vehicle at David Street, Kitty.
While giving evidence, Singh had told the court that the robbery had occurred around 20:45hrs. He maintained that there was adequate lighting in the area which aided him in identifying his attackers.
On February 29, City Magistrate Judy Latchman jailed Tyson for 58 months after he was found guilty of robbing another taxi driver.
Tyson, while armed with a gun robbed Anish Veersammy of one Toyota Premio motorcar valued at $3.8M, two speakers valued $200,000 and $10,000 cash among other items. The robbery occurred on July 3, 2015 at Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara.
Tyson is also being accused of committing another armed robbery.
It is alleged that on July 1, 2015 at Durban Backlands, Tyson in possession of an unlicenced firearm robbed Eson Grimes of a car valued $3.2M, one cell phone valued $20,000, one driver’s licence valued $2,000 and $34,000 cash, among other items, all totaling $3.2M.
This matter is still engaging the attention of the courts.
Tyson’s fellow prison inmate, Nico Layne, has been jailed twice within the past five months.
The 21- year old of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown was convicted on March 22, last, for robbing Ivelaw Hartman at knife point of a cell phone and $19,000 cash on June 12, 2015.
Layne was sent to prison for one year and three months for this offence.
The convict had vehemently denied robbing the man and had told the court that he could not recall where he was on the day in question. But the Magistrate underlined that she disbelieved Layne’s story.
Last November, Layne was found guilty of robbing Shafeik Mohamed of a Digicel cellular phone valued $39,000 and $26,000 cash. The robbery occurred on May 6, 2015.
Court facts revealed that on the day in question around 17:05hrs, Mohamed was driving along Parade Street, when he was stopped by Layne and another man.
The men inquired from the taxi driver if he was working and subsequently boarded the vehicle. Layne sat in the back seat, while his accomplice sat in the front passenger’s seat.
The facts disclosed that the men requested that Mohamed take them to a certain location.
On arrival at the location, Layne and his partner pointed a knife and gun at the taxi driver and demanded him to hand over his valuables. They then made good their escape.
Before passing sentence on Tyson and Layne, both Magistrates considered all mitigating factors coupled with the seriousness and prevalence of the offences.
They also underscored the fact that a gun and knife were used during the robberies and the need to prevent others from contemplating such crimes.
