Dear Editor,
I have taken note, with interest and raised eyebrows, news from your well-read newspaper that there are a number of bids currently being assessed for a major contract with the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL).
I read with alarm yesterday that one of the companies bidding for the project of providing smart meters and new transformers and running of new lines was one that recently took part in a project to build sub-stations where there were delays and possible problems.
Mr. Editor, in recent days also you carried a report of three water wells being built by a contractor and there were delays and even evidence that the contractor had no experience. In Guyana, it is common knowledge that in the past, contracts to the tune of billions have been awarded to companies with little or no experience and track records.
We have seen billions of dollars in losses, as can be evidenced from contracts like the Amaila Falls roads. We have engineers who turn a blind eye to quality of works. We see monies being advanced and not matched with the amount of works being done.
We see the East Bank Demerara four-lane in trouble and there are numerous other examples. There is a new Government in place and President David Granger and his team in the Coalition, have promised to clean up the system in place. It is one year later now. Are we seeing a replay of state contracts being awarded to friends and families?
Are we going down the same road when people resign themselves to seeing engineers who monitoring our projects pay little attention and continue to collect bribes?
We are celebrating 50 years as an independent nation.
We have to change. We believed the coalition when they campaigned that there will be changes.
We expect GPL and the Guyana Water Inc. and other state entities and ministries to know we are paying close attention to what they do with our tax dollars.
Mr Editor, the five years are going to be up in the blink of an eye. Our politicians will come knocking on our doors. Contractors will have to know that the game has changed. We will no longer tolerate incompetency and graft and corruption of the past.
The BKs and CMC and Fip Motielalls of this country cannot continue to “eyepass” us.
