Dear Editor,
I wish you could have met Patricia Mitchell King. That woman! Never without a smile always laughing, at 45 she was already a proud grandmother, fluent in Spanish working in a reputable security firm. We called her Mitchell she always had a positive word and I can never recall her being angry.
Her post was at an embassy. She was hardworking and diligent and she loved Christmas more than her birthday. Her excitement always stepped up a few levels during this festive season. Mr Editor you would not believe who killed her in the middle of preparing for Christmas 2015 . Mr Minibus .
Like a rocket he blazed down the East Coast corridor until the inevitable happened and the blazing rocket that was guided by one (of the many) irresponsible bus
driver(s) converted into a metal wreck tumbling along the roadway with our friends relatives and neighbours on the inside screaming and helplessly spinning out of control .
Mr Editor, Mitchell my friend was flung out of the window and that out of control metal wreck smashed into the back of her head as she lay there on the road. It’s 6 long painful months for her family, friends and workmates. Mitchell deserved
Christmas with her immediate family and she deserved to celebrate the Golden Jubilee with her Guyanese family but Mr Minibus took her life. Everyday a bus zooms in and cuts into my lane just inches in front of my car. When that happens, I remember Mitchell,
Daily, as mini buses fly pass me with music booming I cannot hear my car horn or a passing siren and people packed four and five in a seat and I say sorry to Mitchell. Ever so often when I see school children packed like sardines sitting in each other’s lap and the conductor with his butt sticking out the window. I reflect on the brutal death of Mitchell.
Recently, I refused to let a speeding minibus cut me off in heavy traffic and a female passenger pushed out her head and called me “early morning bad mind” and on behalf of Mitchell i said to her “keep encouraging the driver and all of y’all gon die in that bus”. And the numerous times I see traffic police turn a blind eye or slip the 30 pieces of coin like Judas blood money into their pockets, I’m speechless cause Mitchell deserved better and the nation she loved failed her. Over 25 years of Mr Minibus killing our men women and children and the ‘powers that be’ stand by still convinced that change will come. Yes Mr Editor but that change will come when a very important high profile Guyanese gets slaughtered by Mr Minibus. In the mean while Mr Bus continues to slaughter and abuse Guyanese daily.
