Patriotic Essequibians, Regional councillors and students who attended a ceremony to mark Guyana’s 50th, anniversary organised by executives of Region Two Democratic Council (Pomeroon/ Supenaam) were pleased
to embrace the Minister of Infrastructure, David Patterson.
Patterson spoke to a sizeable audience on the grounds of the Anna Regina fire station compound. Unlike, the major celebration that was observed Wednesday night, Essequibo celebrated Wednesday morning.
A parade by the disciplined forces comprising members of the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Police Force and the Fire Service started the occasion which preceded the hoisting of the national flag.
Patterson explained that even before Guyana attained independence in 1966, Essequibo always had a rich history dating back to the era of the Dutch. However, the Essequibo Coast has faced and is still facing its fair share of problems. Patterson identified the absence of well developed infrastructure in the Region which he explained lead to increased production costs.
Unemployment was also recorded as another issue facing the Essequibo populace, but despite the challenges, residents persevered and for the most part, thrived.
“Despite, at times you are forgotten than other areas, you have risen above the difficulties, and emphasized that we are indeed One People, One Nation and One Destiny.”
Noting how poor infrastructure can stymie growth, Patterson recalled that last year his Ministry constructed, rehabilitated and maintained roads across the country more so in Region Two. Last year more than 8,500 meters of roads were completed in the Region, totalling $146M.
For this year, however, residents of Region Two will continue to see the development of roads. $2.6M were allocated for roads in the 2016 budget, while for bridges another $294M has been provided for rehabilitation and repairs.
Through improved roads Patterson lamented that the government is expanding efforts to improve farm- to market access which will focus on stimulating micro- farms and small scale agro- processing initiatives to see Essequibo live up to the potential envisioned for its 50 years.
“Better roadways and bridges mean increased commercial activities which in turn will lead to greater income and financial security for the people of this beautiful region.”
Patterson said emphasis will be placed on reducing road fatalities, the installation of traffic lights, street lights and the markings and placement of signs will be implemented.
Essequibo will also see improved connection between the Coast and riverain areas as well as the upgrading of fleet vessels. There will be new river transport vessels as well as the upgrading of stellings and the development of dockyards for yachts.
Regional Executive Officer, Rupert Hopkinson, called for the collaboration and cooperation between the Regional Chairman and his office. Hopkinson stressed that both the Regional Chairman and the Regional Executive officer are factors of production and regional development by extension.
One proud Essequibian and strong supporter of the coalition government showered praises and extend to the new regime heartfelt blessings for Guyana’s 50th.
Persaud is more proud to be a part of this government’s fast progressing improvements especially in the areas of promoting uniting among all Guyanese. Even more proud is Persaud to see a clean and green Region.
The outspoken supporter is however appealing to Guyanese to stop saying ill things about the government but instead to promote and think positively. She is urging all Regional Councillors and the Anna Regina Municipality to work together in the interest of developing Region Two.
