The Guyana Action Committee (GAC) on Friday presented the Burnham Educational Scholarship Trust (BEST) fund with $1 million in the presence of Attorney General Basil Williams.
The presentation took place at the Attorney General’s Office on Carmichael Street. The funds were raised at a Gala and Dinner held by GAC last Saturday at the Pegasus Hotel.
AG Williams noted that the organization wanted transparency in the handing over of funds hence the reason for the presentation being held in his office.
Bonita Montaque the Operations Director of GAC noted that the GAC focuses on literacy development thus the donation to the BEST fund. She added that illiteracy has been affecting Guyana’s youth and GAC has decided to play their part in tackling this issue.
She indicated that this donation will benefit the children of Guyana and possibly have a life changing impact on some.
GAC has embarked on several projects in Guyana. It hosts a number of literacy events annually as well as domestic violence workshops. Mrs. Montaque noted that GAC takes domestic violence seriously and welcomes anyone that wishes to help.
Secretary to the BEST Board of Trustees Ms. Cheryl Sampson was on hand to accept the cheque and noted that BEST originally started awarding scholarships to ten children who were successful at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), one child from each Region of Guyana.
She stated that they decided to award three children from Region Four as of 2013 because of the high population, one child from the East Coast of Demerara, East Bank of Demerara and Georgetown.
BEST was formed in 2012 at the behest of His Excellency President David Granger who is the patron of the organization. Ms. Sampson stated that BEST is thankful for the assistance.
