Celebrations to make Guyana’s Golden Jubilee of Independence have been happening all across the country and Maburuma was not to be left out.
In what could be described as a historic flag raising ceremony, scores of residents and regional officials were joined by Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings.
The programme which aimed at uniting people of all races and from all walks of life was opened with prayers. This was followed by a packed cultural segment where students from Hosororo Primary, Mabaruma Sub Primary and other surrounding schools performed songs, dances and dramatic poetry. It was held at the Mabaruma Settlement Sports Complex.
After 50 years of independence for Guyana, this was the first time that Mabaruma would have celebrated the occasion as a town, having gained that status earlier this year.
In the feature address of the evening, Minister Cummings said she was happy to be a part of such a historic celebration. ”This time around, I am even more delighted to be here with you, because our beautiful nation celebrates 50 years of Independence, and in 2016, Mabaruma became a town! You are part of the fabric of history that marks this auspicious celebration,” she said
The minister stressed the need for the regional administration to work collaboratively with the Ministry of Public Health and other ministries to fix the issues affecting the region.
“Moving forward I would like to see an alignment of purpose between the Ministry of Public Health and the Regional administration of Region One, so that together we will be able to deliver the best quality health care services to the people living here. The regional administration must make special efforts to work along with government to help provide the best quality health care and other services to the people of this beautiful region,” she said.
Regional Chairman, Brentnol Ashley, in his address stressed the need for cohesion in the region. According to Ashley, this would make the region, “pacesetters for unity.”
“There are four cornerstones that a country could thrive upon; racial harmony, national unity, peace and progress. Where there is racial harmony there is national unity, where there is national unity there is peace, where there is peace there is progress,” Ashley said.
There was also the presentation of regional awards to persons who have contributed to development in the areas of health, education and community service.
Jubilee celebrations are to continue in the region with a jubilee float parade and sports. These activities will see the involvement of the citizens from all across Region One.
