Guyana has made noteworthy progress in every sphere of National life since that historic day May 26th 1966 some fifty years ago.
The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club in a message to mark the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary said that there have been remarkable achievements since Independence in all sectors of the economy –Agriculture, Mining, Forestry, Manufacturing, Tourism, as well as in Education, Health, Hinterland and Regional Development, Culture, Youth and Sport, Security, Social and Physical Infrastructure including Roads, Sea defences, Drainage and Irrigation Facilities, Aviation to name a few.
There have also been tremendous increases in local and foreign investment. The CS&TC emphasized that over the years, there has also been a deep sense of patriotism and pride developing in all Guyanese as they press on to accomplish the task of Nation building.
“But as the Nation celebrates its Golden Jubilee Anniversary, we should not forget to rededicate ourselves to the difficult task of Nation building to which President David Granger and his APNU/AFC administration are devoting their energies and resources and to cooperate with them in all their endeavors to build a strong and Green Guyana for all.
The CS&TC’s message also stated that under President David Granger’s driving and inspired leadership, his pioneering vision, his giant determination and his vehement will, Guyana can enter her fifty first year as an Independent Nation with more confidence and unswerving devotion to development.
The Burnham Government had won Independence after a 152 years of British rule but with a price that it had to accept the monarchy and so Independent Guyana found herself with a monarchial system of Government with the Queen of England still Queen of Guyana.
This was an unhappy ending to our long struggle for Independence and National sovereignty, so at the earliest opportunity then Prime Minister Forbes Burnham disposed with the monarchy and adopted a Republican system of Government so that Guyana would no longer be ruled by someone who was not a Guyanese.
That date was February 23th 1970. So as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary of that historic event we must regard it as a Red Letter Day in the country’s history.
