The Shelez Tennis club/Homesafe Security Junior Tennis tournament served off on May 5 at the National Racket Centre on Woolford Avenue and saw competition in four categories.
In the boys under-12 Jeremiah Kalekeyzi progressed to the final compliments of two walk-overs defeated Vadeanand Reasul 4/0, 4/0
In the girls U-12 category there was plenty of rivalry as the youngest of the Kalekeyzi siblings; Paula kalekeyzi battled Akeila Jones, but it was the experienced Jones who was victorious 4/0, 4/0.
In the girls and boys U-14 category there was stunning play in both draws. Kalacya Fraser was the victor defeating Ciara Pooran 4/1, 4/1 but that score did not reflect the performance as Pooran came out swinging her racquet fiercely but in the end the more experienced Fraser prevailed.
In the boys U-14 draw Heimraj Reasul was the victor defeating Jordan Beaton 4/5, 4/1. It was a game of fierce power-hitting and clever shots as Reasul came out firing in the first set.
He was leading Beaton 3/0 before his opponent staged a spirited fight back and broke Reasul to finish the set 5/3. In the second set, Reasul quickly found his stride as he came out with clear and precise serving to throw Beaton off while he finished with cross court shots to bring the match to an end.
In the girls U-18 division, crafty Nicola Ramdyhan taught Shivani Persaud a Tennis lesson, throwing down monster serves and ground strokes to win 6/2, 6/0.
The boys displayed exciting Tennis throughout with Joshua Kalekeyzi, who had surprised those present when he defeated the tournament’s number one seed Keenan Persaud, before playing his heart out in his semi-final loss against Jordan Beaton.
In the final, Heimraj Reasul the eldest of the Reasul brothers, got the better of the talented Beaton. Reasul was on fire, throwing down hulk-like serves and booming ground strokes which Beaton had no answer for and registered an emphatic 6/0, 6/1 victory.
At the conclusion of the tournament the prizes were presented to the winners while Orande Dainty thanked the youngsters for participating and the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) for endorsing the first Junior Club Tournament for the year.
National Coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan said it was her dream come true to see a tournament for children so young and described the competition as a success.
Maurisa Johnson spoke on behalf of the Sponsors Homesafe Security, while several parents were present to share the moment with their proud off-springs.
