Envisaging that a lot more has to be done at a much earlier age to tackle the scourge of social ills plaguing the society at this time, the police in Berbice ‘B’ Division led by Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam have decided to take a hands-on approach to get a hold of the situation.
Some of the ills include drug use, teenage pregnancy, school drop outs and other irregular activities. .
Troubled areas and schools have been targeted as the police seek to not only arrest delinquent teenagers’ and law breakers, but also arrest the situation. They want to work hand in hand with some of the communities and schools.
One such institution is the Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) which has over the years been cited as a trouble school and a hot spot. A number of students have been placed before the court for various indiscretions while students have been placed before the courts, sent to NOC and dropped out of school.
This, the Commander said, has been taken note of, and the police are doing something about it.
Assistant Commissioner Amsterdam along with Traffic Officer Assistant Superintendent Timothy Williams, and Community Relations Officer Assistant, Superintendent Keith Williams, visited the school and met with head teacher, Graham Thomas, and other staff members and discussed various problems affecting the institution.
At the end of the visit by the Commander and his team, he expressed his gratitude towards the headmaster for allowing him to be a part of the reformation of the school, beginning with the students.
One such way is through the implementation of the force’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) programme which is a new initiative of the Guyana Police Force, and is exactly as the name suggests.
It is scheduled to run for 17 weeks, with students from Forms One to Three. Some 38 students have been enlisted to participate in the inaugural programme, at the conclusion of which a graduation exercise will be held for those who are successful.
