Guyana is expected to be represented when AIBA meets next Wednesday to vote on if to allow professional
boxers at the upcoming Olympics. Guyana Amateur Boxing Association president Steve Ninvalle is scheduled to depart early next week for Lausanne, Switzerland as a member of AIBA Executive Committee when the organization holds an Extra Ordinary Congress on June 1.
The Congress was called specifically to deal with amending the organization’s constitution to make it possible for professional boxers to be welcomed at this year’s and future Olympics.
An AIBA invitation to National Federation presidents and secretary generals stated “The motion to amend Article 13(J) of the AIBA Statutes is a historical cornerstone for the future development of our sport since it allows AIBA and its National Federations to determine boxer’s eligibility status and extending to the applied rules of the sport and athlete’s at events organized or endorsed by AIBA within the territory or jurisdiction.”
The invitation which was signed by AIBA president Dr. Chin Kuo-Wu added that ”as AIBA enters its 70th year and celebrates boxing’s rich history, this proposal to amend Article 13(J) ensures it will be at the forefront of the international sports movement and empowers Member Federations to decide which boxers to enter into competition. I look forward to seeing you in Lausanne for this important milestone for the advancement of our sport.”
In earlier times, AIBA had frowned upon the mixing of amateurs and professionals during sanctioned competitions. Ninvalle created history in November 2014 by becoming the first person from CARICOM to be elected to the prestigious Executive Committee of the world’s second most powerful sport organization.
