-Classic 6 places third
Team 25 led by former national mid-field ace Collie Hercules mastered the wet conditions better than Wisroc and this resulted in them being crowned this year’s champions of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Linden Futsal Competition which ended in the wee hours on Wednesday morning, at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac.
Captain of Team 25 Ryan Noel receiving the Championship trophy from Linden Manager Shondel Easton in the presence of teammates, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste and Outdoor and Events Manager Mortimer Stewart.
Played before a massive outpouring of fans who not only braved the persistent rain, but waited for hours just to see the two finalists square off for the title which went to Team 25 via a 2-1 margin of victory.
On target for the winners were Hercules and Kennard Tyrell, who netted in the third and 31st minute respectively, while Orandy Wills 39th minute strike proved to be a mere consolation for the losers.
The result meant that Team 25 took home $400,000 and the Championship trophy, while Wisroc’s second placed finish earned them $150,000 and a trophy.
Team 25 grabbed the lead when Hercules’ fierce right-footed shot deflected off a scrambling defender and rolled over the goal-line. It was perhaps a signal that the night belonged to Team 25.
Shortly after, another proof that it was going to be Team 25’s night was when Wisroc’s Mark McLean swiveled neatly and hammered a thunderous right-footer that crashed on to the crossbar and sailed into touch for a goal kick.
The half came with Team 25 clinging to their 1-0 advantage and all to play for in the final period.
The new champs came out in the half and seemed content on preserving their lead with Hercules pulling the strings and directing the show and this strategy seemed to frustrate the opposition and they conceded another goal this time off the boot of Tyrell.
It came in the 31st when he raced down the right side on a counter attack that left Wisroc with one player defending against two and he swept in Hercules pass for a 2-0 lead.
However, undaunted by their plight, Wisroc continued to fight and was rewarded with a goal one minute before full time when Wills weaved past one defender following a cross and fired into an open goal.
It was all that they were able to muster before the final whistle sounded to hand Team 25 the title and the top prize.
In the third place playoff, Classic-6 cruised to a comfortable 5-1 win over High Rollers to grab $100,000 and a trophy, while the losers took away $75,000 for their effort.
Earlier, a fan Yanic Cornette won a Guinness branded cooler following a draw, before the commencement of the final.
Among those in attendance were Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste, Linden Branch Manager Shondel Easton and Outdoor and Events Manager Mortimer Stewart.
