– Dr. Norton tells Region Five
Fort Wellington, Region Five, came alive yesterday, as scores of persons gathered at the Regional Democratic Council’s compound to partake in a flag-raising ceremony on the occasion of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary
The ceremony attracted regional officials, Members of Parliament and Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton, who delivered the feature remarks.
Minister Norton said that the 50-year milestone Guyana celebrates “could not have been possible were it not for the struggles of those who came before us”. Guyana gained independence from Great Britain on May 26, 1966.
“Because of the hard work of leaders such as Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Forbes Burnham and Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow, Guyana was lifted out of centuries of oppression which greatly affected its people,” Minister Norton said.
He added that significant strides in all sectors were made over the past five decades and Guyanese should take pride in those achievements.
“Therefore, this is a time for reflection and renewed patriotism which has been evident over the past few months as Guyanese prepare for this auspicious occasion.
Patriotism is love, devotion and support of one’s country and that is exactly what Guyanese at home and abroad should demonstrate all year round.
We must work together to keep Guyana on this path of development in order to ensure that the struggles of those who have gone before us do not go in vain,” Minister Norton said.
The Public Health Minister charged those gathered to live up to the national motto of “One people, One nation, One destiny”, at all times, by living in love and unity.
“It is only when we work together that we can see our country move forward into greater equality and prosperity.”
Region Five Chairman, Vickchand Ramphal, in delivering remarks said that for the Region to achieve its vision for development, unity is needed. He added that whilst there are challenges within the region, uniting to solve them is a goal to be attained.
The formal programme was punctuated with songs done by a choir of primary school students drawn from the region.
