Professional Key Shop and Windjammer International Hotel will on Sunday host a Golden Mile Road Race beginning at 704 Sports Bar and Lounge at 4pm. The event received the blessings of the Athletics Association of
Guyana (AAG) yesterday.
“Me and my friend, Carey Griffith decided to go into athletics to help out athletes. This one mile will be different; we wanted to change the flavor from 5km and 10km races,” one of the organisers of the event, Kwame Ridley of Professional Key Shop told the media at the launch of the event at 704 Sports Bar.
“We hope the athletes show up. There are a lot of big prizes up for grabs, but we do not want to mention it on air,” he added when asked about the prize monies, admitting that $75,000 will go to the winner of the race.
The race will proceed west along Lamaha, South into Carmichael Street and finish in front of the Oasis Café, the building that also houses Professional Key Shop. Windjammer’s Carey Griffith said that he will be sponsoring a grand prize for the winner.
“We have a grand prize for the winner from Windjammer that will be announced on the day. We want to see long distance racing expand,” he said.
Meanwhile, AAG President, Aubrey Hutson gave the event his blessings, stating that he is happy to be part of the event. “It was not on the calendar, but we are happy to be part of it. We will ensure all statutes of the IAAF are kept,” he said, encouraging the organisers to continue to support athletics.
