The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) yesterday introduced United States-based,
Troy Doris, to Guyana. Doris, who will represent Guyana at the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil is currently in Guyana with his family for the Golden Jubilee of Independence.
He is the number three world ranked triple jumper, who trains in Chicago. GOA and the Athletic Association of Guyana discussed details of the 27 year old athlete’s representation of Guyana at Olympic House
“I am very excited for this opportunity to represent Guyana. But my intention is to be a catalyst. I initially wanted to represent Guyana, which was my priority; trying to get a medal is beautiful, of course it will be great to get a medal, but how well can I try to exploit the talent in a good way in Guyana? Like I said, I want to be a catalyst to try to get more Guyanese athletes involved in field events”, Doris said yesterday.
“Knowing how track and field works, we know everybody has good and bad days. I will always hope for a medal,” he said when asked about his chances at the Olympic Games.
“I just know how my training is going and what I am capable of… trying new things with my Coach and the directions that’s going, I feel that I will reach the finals and I know once I am in the finals I will try to get a medal for Guyana,” he added.
Before competing at the Olympic Games, it was disclosed that Doris will take a month in Greece then compete at the Diamond League meets in Norway and Switzerland on June 8 and 14. He is among four Guyanese athletes who have qualified for the Olympics to-date.
The others are Brenessa Thompson, Aaliyah Abrams and Winston George. The Olympic Games will be held during August 5-21. According to Games Chef-De-Mission, Garfield Wilshire three swimmers will also attend the Games on universality conditions.
