Four teams advanced following the opening set of matches in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament
last weekend. The action is set to continue this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, with double headers at the respective Den Amstel and Victoria grounds.
Last Friday at the Victoria ground, Grove Hi Tech became the first team to move onto the next round of the knockout tournament when they squeezed past Buxton Bakewell by a 1-0 margin. Joining them were home side Victoria Kings who had to work hard to overcome Agricola on penalty kicks 5-3 after the scores were locked at 2-2 following regulation and extra time. It was sweet revenge for the Victoria Kings after losing to Agricola last year in a key encounter.
The action shifted to the Den Amstel ground on the West Demerara on Sunday last with Pouderoyen beating Soesdyke 2-1. Host Den Amstel then got past Kuru Kuru 4-2. The losers were guilty of squandering several chances that could have changed the result.
Meanwhile, the tournament continues on Saturday at Den Amstel with Beavers taking on Eagles from 2:00pm, while at 4:00pm, Uitvlugt challenge Herstelling.
Sunday the games are fixed for the Victoria ground on the East Coast with BV Triumph clashing with Mahaica from 6:30pm, while the nightcap pits Golden Grove against Cougars at 8:30pm.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur, the former National footballer and later Coach, who has been behind this tournament for 22 years, is encouraging fans to come out and support the games.
Arthur noted that the teams are battling for the Mayor’s Cup and a first prize of $700,000 donated by Aruwai Resort, second $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, third $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy and fourth $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team. The tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
This year’s tournament has been engrafted to form part of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee celebrations.
