…remanded to prison
Two men, who allegedly followed a woman from a city bank and robbed her, were yesterday refused bail when they appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court charged with robbery under-arms.
Kempton Glenn, 24, of Lot 124 East La Penitence and Robin Holder, 25, of Lot 13 North East La Penitence pleaded not guilty to the charges read to them by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul.
It is alleged that on May 19, last, at Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara while armed with a gun, the men who are both plumbers, robbed Marlyn Brumigin of $180,000 cash.
It is also alleged that on the same day, while armed with a gun they robbed Stacy Ashby of a quantity of items valuing $180,000.
According to reports, the men followed Brumigin to her Atlantic Ville home all the way from a city bank and pounced on her. Police said that about 14:00hrs last Thursday Brumigin was about to enter her home after transacting business at a bank, when she was held at gunpoint by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, and who had ridden up on a motorcycle.
The woman reportedly raised an alarm, but the men took away a bag containing cash.
However, as the men were about to escape, neighbours and two off duty policemen confronted the perpetrators and snatched away the stolen bag with money. It was reported that the bandits still tried to ride away but were stopped when a motorist drove into them.
Glenn and Holder were also charged with being in possession of an illegal pistol along with nine live rounds of ammunition.
Attorney, Moti Singh represented the defendants. He told the court that his clients have no knowledge of the crime. In fact, Singh said that on the day in question, the defendants were returning home from work when they were arrested by police.
The lawyer argued that the men were never placed on identification parades neither were they taken for medical attention for injuries they received as a result of them being hit by a car. Further, Singh stated that the defendants were never charged before.
However, Police Prosecutor David Goodridge opposed bail for the defendants. He argued that the men are wanted for similar matters in Georgetown and were charged before for armed robbery.
Goodridge pointed out that the men were caught red handed in the act after trailing the women from the bank. He also pointed out that should the defendants be released on bail there is a likelihood that they will commit other robberies and tamper with the prosecution’s witnesses since they know where they reside.
According to the Prosecutor, police are currently in possession of the stolen cash, motorcycle and unlicensed firearm.
Goodridge indicated that he is still awaiting the findings of an analyst report on the firearm.
This matter has been adjourned until June 27.
