The Guyana National Junior Men’s Hockey Team suffered their second defeat to joint pool B leaders Mexico on day two of the Junior Pan American Championships in Toronto, Canada. Guyana had a much better start than in their first match against Chile, scoring the opening goal in the 10th minute off of an Aroydy Branford penalty corner flick.
Guyana were unfortunate not to go up 2-0 when a quick outlet pass from Daniel Hooper found Leon Bacchus who ran half the length of the pitch, eliminated the goalkeeper before slipping a pass to Nyron Joseph who lost his footing just as he was about to tap the ball into an empty net.
The scare of almost conceding a second seemed to jolt Mexico into action and they responded immediately through Raymundo Lemus. Yamil Mendez gave Mexico the lead in 23rd minute which they maintained into half time. Mexico scored again in the first minute of the second half to take their lead to 3-1. Guyana continued to push for a second but this made them vulnerable to the counter attack and Mexico were clinical when the opportunities came their way, scoring four more unanswered goals to secure the victory 7-1.
In assessing his team’s performance, coach Robert Fernandes said, “I think we started well today, we had an opportunity to go up 2-0 and I think that would haven’t given the boys some extra confidence to push on. We were still in it at half time but we were unable to match Mexico’s intensity in the second half.
We will have to maintain a compact defensive structure for a complete game on Monday against Canada if we hope to be competitive. After losing their first two matches in front of their home crowd, I’m sure Canada will be looking to restore their pride against us so we must be prepared to match their level of intensity for an entire 70 minutes.”
In other results from day two:
Argentina defeated USA 9-0
Trinidad & Tobago defeated Puerto Rico 14-0
Chile defeated Canada 2-1
Guyana take on Canada today at 5:30pm. Local fans will be able to stream the matches live on the www.panamhockey.org website.
