Dear Editor;
What are we going to celebrate in sports? Are we going to recognise that cricket is the most successful game in which Guyanese have participated and led not only in our country but in the West Indies as well? But how much do our current young generations, including Ministers, know of (in alphabetical order) Basil Butcher, Stephen Comacho, Roy Fredericks, Lance Gibbs, Alvin Kallicharan, Roger Harper, Rohan Kanhai, Clive Lloyd, Joe Solomon?
Clive Lloyd alone, with his record as the best West Indies captain ever, and who went on to being most influential in the management of cricket worldwide – the Big Cat alone is worthy of the most nostalgic reminiscences. Clive Lloyd had flown home from Australia to Bourda at the orchestration of Forbes Burnham, our Independence President, to brighten up the hearts of Guyanese cricket lovers at a test match in 1973.
Bourda, regarded as one of the most historic of Test Cricket grounds in the world in its day, deserves to be celebrated at this time, its stands bedecked with the lights of the images of our cricketing heroes, who are still alive.
Give their fans more chance to feel and appreciate the atmosphere of when Guyana Cricket was supreme! Certainly however Shiv Chanderpaul must be the crescendo! At least his drive goes past the Office of the Presidency.
E.B. John
