An East Canje man who threw methylated spirits on his son and set him ablaze, has been committed to stand trial during the next sitting of the criminal assizes of the Berbice High Court on a charge of attempted murder.
The man Ravendra Samaroo, 34, of Lot 133 Gangaram, East Canje, a field foreman attached to the Rose Hall Estate had first appeared in the Reliance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Marissa Mittleholzer.
He is alleged to have committed the act on Thursday May 7, last on his son Ricky Samaroo, 11.
Prosecutor Sergeant Orin Joseph revealed that the man and his son lived alone at the above address.
Around 22:50 hrs on the day in question the two were at home where the elder Samaroo was drinking. The man subsequently attempted to go out to purchase more alcoholic beverages. However he was stopped by his son who was afraid to remain at home alone. The man insisted in going and his son held on to his boots.
As a result the man got hold of some methylated spirits and threw it about the child’s body then lit a match. This caused burns to the lower part of the boy’s body, face, back and chest.
The child was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted for emergency treatment before being transferred to the Georgetown hospital where he was admitted for further treatment.
The father was arrested and charged.
