A welder who attempted to smuggle cocaine with a street value of $5.5M inside large Kerrygold Milk packages was yesterday given a fine and sentenced to serve four years in prison.
Safraz Jallalodeen,30, who was caught trying to smuggle over 6.048kg of cocaine while he was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) was fined $16.3M together with the four-year sentence after he pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to trafficking the drugs.
The Court heard that Jallalodeen of 14 Riverview, Ruimveldt, Georgetown was promised US$7000 to deliver the drugs to the States.
Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford-Thompson told the court that Jallalodeen is a welder. On May 19, last, he checked in as a passenger of Caribbean Airlines and was scheduled to travel on flight BW526 destined for JFK International Airport.
Until he was halted by ranks from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) attached to the airport. The prosecutor said that the ranks acted on information received and conducted a search on two of his suitcases.
During this search, the prosecutor said that both of them were found to contain what appeared to be large Kerrygold Full Cream Milk packages. Through examination it was revealed that the whitish- powdery substance was not milk but cocaine. The prosecutor said Jallalodeen was subsequently told of the offence he had committed and he was cautioned.
“While under caution the defendant made several oral statements that he was given the drugs to take to the United States and would be given US$7000 to do same,” the prosecutor said. Throughout the night the prosecutor said investigations were conducted and he was subsequently charged for the offence.
She added that the defendant gave lengthy statements to assist the investigations and she therefore asked that the court consider this factor for mitigation during the verdict.
The court was adjourned for 15 minutes until the prosecutor obtained the document containing the street market value of the drugs. Chief Magistrate fined him three times the market value.
