The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and an ex-athletes association yesterday launched their Jubilee 10k and Track and Field meet at the CARIFESTA Complex formerly known as the Guyana National Service (GNS) Ground.
The meet is scheduled for tomorrow beginning at 5am. The AAG along with the ex-athletes association has organised a 10km Road Race for distance athletes with the track and field meet scheduled to begin from 11am.
One of the organisers, Burgette Williams-Forde gave some insight into hosting the event.
“I had an appointment with Minister Nicolette Henry; I went to her to get permission to use this ground. I said to the minister we are not here to just host a meet; I told the minister that whatever the Government is doing, we would like the event to be a part of the Golden Jubilee,” Williams-Forde stated.
David Thomas, another organiser said he hopes the event evolves into something bigger.
“One hope that we can evolve and help develop the athletes to greater standards, we want to partner with the Ministry and help with the athletes to develop so that their story can be a success,” Thomas shared.
Competition Director of the AAG, Mayfield Taylor-Trim noted that all logistics are in place for the event and that they expect a great turnout.
The organisers are reportedly spending in excess of US$6,000. The athletes will be receiving medals and various prizes at both the 10km Road Race and Track and Field events.
The Road Race will start and finish at GNS Ground while the Track and Field event will be held at the National Track and Field Centre.
