The Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) Woodpecker Products Ltd Junior National Squash Championships which is sponsored by Digicel got going on Wednesday evening at the Georgetown Club Inc courts.
This was the second Junior Tournament for the year and is being used to select Guyana’s team for the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championship in the Cayman Islands.
The Guyana team, which has won the overall team title for 11 consecutive years, is expected to be named on Sunday at the completion of the tournament.
The opening day saw seven of the twelve categories being contested and several close and exciting matches were witnessed as players vied to register victories in their matchups.
In the Girls Under-19 division Larissa Wiltshire beat Sarah Lewis 11/1, 11/4, 11/2, while Taylor Fernandes got the better of Makeda Harding 11/1, 11/3, 11/8.
The Boys Under-19s saw Alec Melville getting past Daniel Islam, the elder of the Islam Twins by three sets in a game which ended 11/1, 11/3, 11/6.
In the other U-19 match Alex Cheeks defeated Matthew Phang 11/4, 11/7, 5/11, 11/9.
In the Boys Under-17s Alex Cheeks beat Anthony Islam 11/9, 13/11, 11/8.
While in the Girls Under-17s Rebecca Low beat Maya Collins 11/6, 11/8, 11/6, Ethan Jonas beat James Mekdeci 8/11, 11/8, 11/1, 11/0 and Demetrius De Abreu defeated Kamir Khan 11/4, 11/2, 11/6.

In the Girls Under-13s Kirsten Gomes defeated Haley Carpenter 11/4, 11/6, 11/1, Madison Fernandes beat Teija Edwards 11/0, 11/0, 11/0 and Abosaide Cadogan defeated Aliyah Persaud 11/5, 11/3, 11/5
In the lone game in the Boys Under-11 division Michael Alphonso prevailed over Nathan Rahaman 11/4, 11/1, 11/3
