A number of companies in Guyana have been tangibly demonstrating their corporate responsibility by sponsoring activities and projects dedicated to the nation’s 50th Independence celebrations. One such company is
Banks DIH, with a number of events slated for this month. The entity has now presented an Arch to the Guyanese Government and citizens in honour of the Golden Anniversary.
On Friday, the National Commemoration Commission in partnership with the Banks DIH Group of Companies will unveil the “50th Anniversary of Independence Arch” at the Agricola/Eccles boundary on the East Bank Demerara highway.
In 1966, two arches were presented to the Government and people of Guyana by the Managing Director of the Demerara Bauxite Company, Mr. J.G. Campbell on the occasion of Guyana’s first Independence celebration. One was located at Ruimveldt and the other at the head of Brickdam.
The two arches were designed by Canadian architect Edric Flack. They were built with aluminum processed from bauxite mined in Mackenzie, Linden. Both arches became popular Guyanese landmarks.
The 50th Anniversary Arch was designed by Surinamese company VSH United. It is 27 metres in width and will consist of four parts – including a crown at the top and a flagpole. Infrastructural support for this project was given by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure. The cost of the new arch is approximately US$50,000 (G$10 million).
