Dear Editor,
After the Government changed last year, suddenly it seemed that a large number of people, especially from one particular ethnic background woke up. Like Rip Van Winkle, they slept through the previous years of immense crime in Guyana. We lived through some of the most horrific periods of crime during the PPP/C’s regime, yet many of the people who now complain were silent.
When the old couple was murdered a few months ago, there was so much public outrage in social media. Facebook was plastered with the images of the murdered couple. When the perpetrators of the said crime were exposed, not a single one of these people said a word. It’s as if it did not matter anymore. I have been looking at the faces of the criminals now and the many of them are youths who grew up under the PPP/C’s regime. If anyone is truly serious about Guyana and Guyanese, they would immediately embark on a study about this phenomenon. Bisram, Gampat, Mahabir, Shah, the Swami, Dr. Vindya and others, if they are serious about the affairs of their own kind should have been at the forefront of this. Why are their youths embarking on such depraved heinous criminal activities? Did they suddenly within a matter of months, morphed into monsters? What caused these youths to behave in such a manner to kill people and do so in a manner that blows one mind away? These are children who grew up under the PPP/C.
Today, criminals are being caught and we are now seeing the faces of these criminals and they look like our own brothers and sisters. After so many decades, our children have taken to become harden criminals? How did this phenomenon happen? Anyone who is serious about their children, Guyana, preservation of it culture and traditions will be seriously addressing this issue. I am waiting to see who will put their action where their mouth is?
