Watkins Glen International, New York – It is a non-winged purpose built single seat
race car in a highly competitive class for all competitors. Honda Racing HPD division has provided the FIT motor to the class riding on a MyGale Chassis with all cars relatively equal as possible which makes the racing exciting.
The weekend began with inclement weather during practice and qualifying and continued during Race 1. Point’s leader # 07, Steve Bamford had an unfortunate spin out on the opening lap and finished tenth. # 82, Calvin Ming of Team Pelfrey who qualified 3rd overall, narrowly missed a podium finish by finishing 33 seconds behind in fourth, he opted for the dry tires provided by Hoosier to start the race in the wet conditions but, still managed a best lap time of about 2:04. As the track began to dry out within the first 5 laps, Ming picked up several positions but, fell short on his quest to top the field.
K-Hill teammates occupied the 2nd and 3rd spot on the podium, # 24, Portante beat out # 3, Verhagen to the checkered flag by a car length to snag 2nd place. Calvin Ming’s teammate, # 81, Phillippe Denes in the Team Pelfrey MyGale/Honda who started from pole also opted for the Hoosier slicks but, dropped back due to an off course excursion on lap 1 on a wet surface, he worked his way back up the standings as the track dried out to claim victory.
Race 2 was contested on a dry surface with # 81, Denes starting from pole as the best qualifier and his teammate, # 82, Ming started in position 5. Both Team Pelfrey MyGale Honda teammates got off to an excellent start as
they ran 1-2 after the first corner and into the opening laps and away from the rest of the field. A full course caution came out to sort out the debris left by three competitors which erased Team Pelfrey’s massive lead.
At the drop of the green flag on the restart, The Canadian veteran, # 07, Steven Bamford outwitted Team Pelfrey by going around the outside to take the lead on turn 1 but, was subsequently passed and had to settle for 4th. There were numerous lead and positional changes towards a race to the checkered flag with # 81, Denes finishing 3rd, only 0.036 of a second behind # 3, Verhagen with # 82, Calving Ming claiming the top spot on the podium with a narrow 0.0241 second margin with best lap time of about 2:04 once again.
Race 3 on the weekend saw # 81, Phillippe Denes of Team Pelfrey claiming his second victory of the weekend and making it a clean sweep for Team Pelfrey at Watkins Glen, No other team had swept a weekend event before. Denes break the trend of 5 different winners in the previous 5 races of this 21 race season. He narrowly beat out # 3, Neil Verhagen of K-Hill Motorsports by about a nose followed by # 82, Calvin Ming.
The young Guyanese phenom, Ming found himself in a game of snakes and ladder after he was spun out by another competitor and was out of contention in the early stages, had to work hard to get to the final spot on the podium for a 3rd place finish, 15 seconds behind the winner but, improved on his best lap time, just over 1:58.
The competitors will have a few weeks off before contesting the 3rd event at Virginia International Raceway, USA on June 3-5 ‘2016.
