The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) recently held a volleyball and anti suicide trip to Siparuta some 80 miles up the Corentyne river.
The trip was a follow up on the BVA’s commitment to be a part of the countrywide
Suicide Prevention programme. A total of 135 persons undertook the trip which included both males and females in both the senior and junior categories along with other guests.
The inclement weather was a major factor during the trip, however a number of games were played with the matches being one set of 15 points each. Results of some of the matches played were in a senior male encounter. The Port Mourant Training Centre No1 (PMTC1) team continued their good showing by defeating the Siparuta senior team 15-10. In a female encounter a Hinterland combination defeated their visiting counterparts 15-5; in another female game the Siparuta females held steady to score a close 15-13 win over Black Birds from the coast.
Orealla U-20 whipped their counterparts from Siparuta 15-6. In an U-19 game Orealla got the better of No 52 Survivors 15-12. In another U-19 game PMTC defeated Siparuta 15-9, while in a junior encounter the Orealla lads made full use of home advantage to steam roll the team from Line Path Jet with a 15-2 blowout.
In a game that rolled back the years, a visiting veterans combination squeezed past a Siparuta veterans team 15-14 in a close encounter.
In a soft ball encounter, the No 52 Survivors survived a scare to defeat Skeldon by 3 runs in a five over game. Survivors batted first and made 43 with Skeldon replying with 40. Ramesh Joseph was the man of the match for his 3×6 in one over for Survivors.
Two football matches were also played with Siparuta squeezing past PMTC on penalty kicks 5-4 after full time produced no result. In the veterans encounter the Siparuta team won by a 2-0 margin.
According to BVA president Levi Nedd, despite the inclement weather the activity was successful and was used to finalise the selection of a Berbice junior male and female (school) teams for participation in National competitions in Georgetown. Another purpose of the trip according to Nedd was to spread the suicide awareness programme and enhance the intermingling between players and guests from the Hinterland and those on the coast.
