– killer on the run
Another day, another family killing after too much alcohol.
The victim this time is a 51-year-old man who succumbed early yesterday, hours after he was stabbed by a cousin during a drunken brawl.
Lennox Norton of South Sophia was stabbed to the abdomen. He died around 04:00 hrs yesterday while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
His cousin, the alleged killer, is on the run.
The police in a statement said that at about 21:30hrs on Saturday, Norton was imbibing with a male cousin at Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown, when they became involved in an argument during which he was stabbed to his abdomen.
He succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment at the GPHC.
The victim and suspect were residing in the same house at Lodge at the time of the murder.
Yesterday, at the cousin’s home, Winifred Garraway, the suspect’s mother and the cousin of the dead man, said that she was in her bed when she heard an argument between the two men and immediately told Norton not to worry with her son, who she described as a troublemaker when he “drinks”.
“Everytime he drinks, he does make problem with everyone. Rum don’t gree with he and he won’t stop drink,” the elderly woman stated.
She explained that after she told her cousin not to pay attention to her son, she didn’t hear anything else until people started screaming. The woman, who is visually impaired, said that she was then told that her son had stabbed the father of five.
According to the woman, the 51-year-old victim had moved into her home some three weeks ago since he had nowhere else to go. He worked in the interior. He was reportedly preparing to return to work soon since he had already packed his bag to travel.
While no one could say what the argument between the two men was about, some assumed that the suspect was maybe jealous, since Norton was cooking and doing everything for the his (suspect’s) mother.
Meanwhile, a relative of the two men said that he had just arrived home and heard screaming. He thought that bandits had attacked his family.
“I done pick up my cutlass and run in then I hear that Lennox get stabbed.”
Norton was rushed to the hospital where he was immediately prepared for surgery.
Relatives were informed that the man suffered from severe internal injury as a result of the wound he sustained.
“De doctor say he also lost a lot of blood,” a relative stated.
They are all hoping that Norton’s killer, who is a vendor at the Stabroek Market, gives himself up or is quickly captured.
