A Central Rupununi man who took a cab ride from Georgetown to Parika and couldn’t pay the fare, was sentenced to three months in prison after he couldn’t pay a $30,000 fine that was the alternative, yesterday.
Antonio Julius Rodriguez,43, who lives at lot 10 Central Rupununi, took the taxi from Bourda Market, on Regent Street to Parika alone on April 13, last, and couldn’t pay the $5000 fare.
Magistrate Faith McGusty handed down the sentence after Rodriguez told the court that he couldn’t pay the fine. The prosecutor said that to court documents he was charged before the court for around April last year where he was tried for a similar offence. Rodriguez however, denied this and claimed he could not remember the incident.
The prosecution’s evidence indicated that Rodriguez hired taxi driver, Collin Munroe, and on his arrival at Parika he told the man that until he gets his gold sold he wouldn’t be able to pay the fee. Police said Munroe waited for the man but he never appeared. Court heard that Munroe went on a search for him but he was nowhere to be found.
Rodriguez pleaded guilty to theft of services on Thursday and was remanded to prison until yesterday where he received his sentence.
