Lakeram Shankar, the man who police say stabbed his friend to death during a drinking spree at Timehri three days ago, was yesterday charged with murder when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that between May 8 and May 9, 2016 at Timehri East Bank Demerara the 25-year-old of lot 17 Fire Station Road Timehri, East Bank Demerara murdered, Kawal Persaud.
Shankar was not required to plead because the matter was deemed indictable. He was however represented by Attorney-at-law Satesh Kissoon who told the court that the incident occurred at his client’s home.
The lawyer who said his client is a security officer at Laparkan Trading Company Ltd. told the court that he escorted him to the Timehri Police Station on Wednesday last where he offered himself up to police officers.
The lawyer asked that the court allow the disclosure of statements for the defence. The lawyer who said his client anxiously waits to prove his innocence asked for an early date to be scheduled to begin trial since he was told that the file is complete.
Corporal Dinero Jones informed the court that the post mortem report was only presented yesterday. He told the court that the doctor’s report is the only missing piece outstanding to complete the file.
The matter was adjourned until May 27th, for reports and fixtures.
According to reports, the 54-year-old Kawal Persaud was a labourer and a friend of the accused. It was reported that the incident occurred around 19:00 hours on Sunday at Lot 17 Timehri where they were attending a party.
It was reported that they were seen together sitting on a bench in front of the building drinking alcohol when suddenly a heated argument ensued. After which Shankar reportedly pulled out a knife and gave Persaud a single stab wound to his abdomen where he collapsed and died on the spot.
