Randolph Williams, the cane-cutter who strangled his wife last January at Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara,
has taken his own life.
A police official said that Williams ingested a poisonous substance some time last week at Lima, Essequibo. He reportedly succumbed on Sunday at the Suddie Hospital.
Reports indicate that Williams, 46, of Lot 58 Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara, had been hiding out at relatives at Essequibo, after murdering his estranged wife, Bibi Zabida Khan.
It is alleged that Williams and Khan had just emerged from a vehicle at around 20:30 hrs on January 20, when the cane-cutter dragged his wife into a nearby trench and brutally assaulted her before fleeing.
Khan’s body was found the following day in the same trench. A postmortem revealed that she had been beaten, stabbed and strangled.
Residents had said that Williams had regularly accused his wife of infidelity and had told some individuals that he planned to take his own life after killing his spouse.
One of Khan’s daughters said that police informed them yesterday of Williams’ demise.
Expressing relief that the family finally had closure, the daughter said that she and other siblings had visited their mother’s grave on Mother’s Day.
