West Coast Demerara.
Fruta Conquerors on account of goals either side of play from Hubert Pedro restored their winning form with a 2-0 win against Georgetown Football Club (GFC) after suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of GENESIS winners and FINALE leaders Slingerz in their previous match.
The Guyana Defence Force was led to a solid win over West Berbice’ Monedderlust thanks to a memorable performance that will be remembered for some time from the nippy Delroy Fraser who netted all four goals for the Soldiers in their 4-2 triumph.
Conquerors wasted little time in asserting themselves against the young and determined GFC side which suffered their 11th loss in 13 matches even as they continue the building process.
The fact that Conquerors were limited to just two goals which were scored far apart speaks to the resolve of the GFC unit despite being the whipping boys of this inaugural league.
Pedro sunk his and Conquerors’ first goal in the 5th minute of the match, a goal which no doubt settled the nerves of the Tucville based side coming off a heavy loss.
But GFC stood solid as they kept the Fruta boys at bay for all of 75 minutes before Pedro again stuck in his second to put the game into perspective whilst securing full points for conquerors which consolidated their second place position in the points table behind Slingerz.
The Army boys also pulled off a solid win but still find themselves outside the top four on goal difference. It was Delroy Fraser’s day to shine and he accomplished same in style by hammering in all four goals for his side.
His second came in the 26th minute having opened proceedings ten minutes earlier. Ten minutes after setting up their two goal cushion, Monedderlust’s Keron McDonald who netted both for his side reduced the lead and drew his side level in the 38th minute.
At that juncture of the match, the West Berbicians tails were up as they were harbouring thoughts of upsetting the Soldiers; that feeling would have lasted deep into the second half before they realized that it was just going to be a dream.
Fraser it was who continued his dominance of the opposition’s defence with two more goals in an 11 minute burst. He sent the GDF back into the lead in the 75th minute before sealing the deal four minutes from full time.
With the Golden Jaguars set to host Canada’s Olympic side this Sunday, players will enjoy a break before resuming rivalry next Monday at the Tucville ground when Conquerors oppose Pele in what is anticipated to be a fierce battle.
The curtain raiser will pit the GDF and GFC from 18:00hrs.
