-visitors likely to be amazed by some major attractions
A strong scent of paint compounded by sounds of drilling and hammering greeted the ears upon arrival at the National Exhibition Site at Sophia, Georgetown. Workmen were visible busying themselves constructing booths for GuyExpo. The highly anticipated Trade Fair is set to commence on Thursday, May 12 and continue until Sunday May 15, 2016.
According to Coordinator of GuyExpo, Ms. Tameka Sukhdeo Singh, as at yesterday the preparations were at least 85 per cent completed and are expected to advance swiftly.
The consensus among exhibitors was that they will be able to complete all necessary preparations in time for the start of the event.
Minister of Business and Investment, Mr. Dominic Gaskin, was on site yesterday to get a first-hand view of the progress of the preparatory works.
Sukhdeo Singh noted that while she is pleased with the progress thus far, works were slowed because of the inclement weather pattern.
“The weather was definitely a deterrent to everybody…hopefully from the sunny weather today (yesterday) it gives an indication that we are continuing,” the Coordinator disclosed.
According to her, a number of exhibitors started to build their booths early, which in essence deflected from the chaos that usually occurs during GuyExpo preparations.
But the construction was yet in full swing in all sections of the complex yesterday.
“As you can see the work is still going on…I am so surprised that there are so many buildings in here. We have sold over 350 booths so far. Our target is 400…so 350 is quite significant and I believe we will achieve 400 in the next few days,” the Coordinator informed.
While a number of regular and large exhibitors will be on site such as Ansa McAl, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company and Digicel which over the years have been among the main attractions, this year a few new exhibitors will be on board. Among the new attractions will definitely be the Aruwai Resort, and patrons will be able to have a realistic experience of the resort situated in Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni). Carpenters were yesterday constructing a miniature version.
This year’s exhibition, according to the GuyExpo Committee, promises to be the best ever, given it’s a part of the country’s Jubilee celebrations. The widest range of local products and services will be displayed in one venue, which will be transformed to dazzle all its visitors.
Patrons can avoid lengthy lines by picketing up their tickets any day prior to the event. Tickets are available at the Sophia Secretariat along with vehicle passes. Adult tickets cost $500 while children are $300 each. Parking with adequate security will be provided with the purchase of a $1,000 vehicle pass.
This year, fantastic gate prices will be up for grabs, and patrons will have the opportunity to walk away with a number of fabulous nightly prizes, including a trip for two at Aruwai Resort, City Tours, and a night for two at Herdmanston Lodge. In addition, patrons with winning tickets can walk away with expensive pieces of jewellery, furniture, cellular phones and other items.
Corporate Guyana will be showcasing in a very big way with tons of great opportunities for all and sundry. This includes the much anticipated offerings of the two telecommunications giants, GTT and Digicel.
Training for small businesses is also organised as part of this year’s event, as the Organising Committee is focusing on providing the necessary skills for small entrepreneurs.
According to the Coordinator, there will be two business sessions daily, covering key topics such as Packaging and Marketing, Guidelines on preparing a business plan, Access to Finance, Social Media and Website development.
Entrepreneurs and exhibitors who are interested in developing their businesses are encouraged to attend these forums between Friday and Sunday, which will be held in the boardrooms of the National Exhibition Centre, Guyana Tourism Authority and the Guyana National Bureau of Standards at Sophia, between 14:30 and 16:00 hours.
