The highly anticipated ‘Golden Jubilee’ International Drag Meet is just five days away and already
the air is filled with excitement as Guyanese competitors brace themselves for the expected assault by Suriname that is sending a strong contingent to battle for individual and overall supremacy.
The event which is being organised by the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club will see drivers and riders from the Dutch neighbouring country of Suriname descend on these shores to do battle against local competitors in what is shaping up to be a riveting showdown over the quarter mile drag strip at the South Dakota Circuit.
The Dutch have included the veteran Hans Ijzer whose GMC Typhoon is no stranger to Guyana and a machine that every local dragster respects and his support will come from Ashton Ceyaram, who pilots a Toyota Chaser, Ruifan Chen (Honda Integra), Prakash Lachman (Toyota Supra), Micheal Namchand (RX7), (Navin Lalbiharie (Nissan 350Z), Jean-Paul Jose (Ford Cobra Jet) Lester Choi (Nova) and Vidyakoemar Soekhoe (Mitsubishi Evo).
They will also be represented in the Superbike category by Tom Gomperts (Suzuki GSX R) and Giovanni Slagveer astride a similar machine.
However, the likes of Anand Ramchand in his Toyota Verossa and Mitsubishi Evolution along with his Toyota Vitz and Rondell Daby in his lightning fast Toyota Supra will no doubt lead Guyana’s attack in defence of home turf.
Both Ramchand and Daby have won overall titles in the past so they already know about what is required to be champions.
Daby’s record on the South Dakota strip is impressive, while Ramchand’s is similar so it will be interesting to see who will defer to whom or will they too have their own internal rivalry.
The other driver who could pose a threat to them both in addition to the Surinamese is the other Daby sibling Peter whose Mitsubishi Evolution presented them both with tough opposition throughout last year.
Charlie Henry, who usually rides a 1000cc Superbike, will be Guyana’s best bet for top honours in the motorcycle category since not much is known about their Dutch counterparts’ competence in this division.
The Porta Tree Timing System which is equipped with specialized starting lights that allow quarter mile speeds to be recorded will be used during the day’s races.
Races commence at 09:00 hrs and admission for adults is $1000, $500 children, while children under-12 and vehicles are free.
