Sixteen-year-old forward, Stanton Rose won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award Saturday night when the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) handed out prizes for the Road to Mecca National Club Championships at Palm Court.
Colts won the title when they replayed Retrieve Raiders in the Finals three weeks ago at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. As a result, they collected the $500,000 first prize, while Raiders got the $250,000 second prize.
Mackeson Brand Manager, Jamaal Douglas (third, right) hands over the winning cheque and the Championship Trophy to Colts’ captain, Dave Causway Saturday night at Palm Court while Colts’ Basketball Club shares the moment.
Last year’s champions, Pacesetters had won the third place award against Ravens, taking home a $150,000 purse while Ravens received $100,000. Pacesetters guard, Travis Burnett was adjudged ‘Best Scorer of the Tournament’ with 66 total points.
Raiders’ forward, Dwayne Roberts won ‘Best Defensive Player’ with Colts Coach, Dane Kendall taking home the ‘Coach of the Tournament’ award. Mackeson Brand Manager, Jamaal Douglas, expressed his satisfaction for the level basketball has reached.
“I was part of basketball for a very long time; we basically rescued it, and brought it back to this level,” Douglas boasted, adding “I like the fact that Colts have a lot of young players; it is good to see youths playing in the game.”
“We at Mackeson love to work with the GABF and we’re happy that basketball is progressing,” Douglas continued. The National Club Championships was well attended and included several entertainment features over several weeks of competition.
