Continuing in his series looking at football activity in Guyana in keeping with our fifty years as a republic, Statistician Charwayne Walker reflects on the last time this country, then British Guiana, played under the Union Jack (British flag) before unfurling the Golden Arrowhead.
One year before independence June 1965, British Guiana led by the late former West Indian footballer Monty Hope defeated Barbados 2-1 in a four match international football series played at GCC and GFC. The tourists led by West Indies footballer Reginald Haynes opened the British Guiana campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory against Mackenzie at the MSC ground in Linden. Buoyed by that performance the Bajans shocked the hosts in the series opener at GCC Bourda with a hard fought 1- nil victory. Hardcourt Haynes was the Bajan high man, his thunderbolt give British Guiana’s custodian Birdette Marshall no chance.
Monty Hope’s men rebounded with a superb performance in the 2nd test. Albert Baker was the player of the match.
His corner kick in the 15th minute found the unmarked Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond who’s first shot beat the Bajan custodian. In the 33rd minute, Baker’s classical free kicks give the Barbadian keeper no chance. Gerald ‘Beef’ Francesco sealed things off in the 69th minute with a wonderful goal. At full time the scores read British Guiana 3, Barbados nil.
Match of the series, third test played at GCC Bourda – British Guiana won 4-3. British Guiana opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond’s brilliance. Barbados equalized in the 32nd minute when skipper Monty Hope deflected the ball pass his goalkeeper, Birdette Marshall. The host went ahead 2 minutes later when Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond hammered home a beauty. 5 minutes after half time, Gerald ‘Beef’ Francesco scored to give British Guiana a 3-1 advantage. Barbados reduced its homeside lead in the 62nd minute, when Hardcourt Haynes beat a diving Birdette Marshall to his left with a power shot. Basil Simmons scored British Guiana’s 4th goal in the 75th minute. Barbados pulled one back just before full time, when Hardcourt Haynes beat Birdette Marshall to complete his hat-trick.
4th and final test played at GFC, resulted in a draw one-all giving British Guiana its first series win over Barbados since 1953. British Guiana scored first in the 27th minute when Basil Simmons beat the Bajan custodian with a dagger. Barbados equalized in the 56th minute when Lionel Gill fouled Michael Ryan in the box. Ryan converted the penalty.
