Slingerz FC remained on course to win the inaugural Stag Elite League – FINALE having already taken the GENESIS with an emphatic and dismissive 8-1 win over second placed Fruta Conquerors when league action continued on
Friday evening last at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora.
Dominican National player and consistent scorer Julian Wade was in ripping form as he blasted the nets on four occasions with a brace each from Trayon Bobb and Domini Garnet.
Friday’s opening match saw Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United erasing a one goal first half deficit to brush aside the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3-1.
Conquerors held strong for the first half hour of the match but when Slingerz finally cracked their opponents’ resistance there was a steady trek back to the centre line to restart play.
Skillful and nagging midfielder Trayon Bobb was the first to ink his name on the score sheets adding another goal this season to his name in the 31st minute but Conquerors did not lay back as they drew level in the 4th minute of added on time in the first half (45+4) to leave the half in the balance.
However, the second half turned out to be the Slingerz show as the West Demerara based side turned on an enormous amount pressure on their Tucville based counterparts to hand them their biggest defeat of the season.
Wade who has been in excellent form this past season opened proceedings in the second minute of the final half with his first of the match in the 47th minute. There was a quiet period of 23 minutes but then the flood gates opened as Slingerz displayed a high level of fitness backed up by clinical finishing.
Domini Garnett fired in his first in the 70th minute to start a steady flow. Wade was back in the mix in the 76th, 85th and 86th to complete his helmet-trick, while Bobb achieved his double in the 88th and Garnett his brace one minute later to complete a memorable and huge triumph which saw them remaining unbeaten, consolidating their position at the top of the leader board at the end of round 12.
Alpha United left their victory bid for the second half after finding themselves trailing the GDF from the 13th minute when Delroy Fraser found the back of the nets for the Soldiers. Dwayne Lawrence neturalised the Army’s advantage in the 52nd minute before Alpha went on to arrest their opponents.
King Solomon Austin in the 68th minute put the former National champions ahead before elder statesman Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams sealed the deal in the 79th minute.
Two more matches are slated for today at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora from 18:00hrs. The GDF will seek to restore some pride in their match against Monedderlust, while Conquerors will hope to do the same when they collide with bottom of the table GFC.
